Yesterday, as I mentioned in Notes on Wednesday night, I had to go into Boston for a medical appointment. Boston is about an hour south of me. It’s always a stressful drive if there is traffic. Boston is known for crazy drivers and bad traffic. Just saying, because I have lived here most of my life.
Anyway, I was up earlier than normal. My daughter drove in with me with so I didn’t have to contend with driving in the traffic and the medical test I went in for. Happy say all went well with the traffic and the test, back for a re-check in a year. As some of the readers know I had surgery last December. Health issues have played a large part in my life for the past 2 or 3 years. I feel as though a reprieve is happening. I am hopeful today.
After my appointment, we stopped for lunch on the way home. We took the long way home driving old Route 1 for the last half of the trip, and then we detoured over to the Parker River River National Wildlife Refuge to look for swans and geese on what was a wet, foggy day.
We saw three Northern Harrier Hawks, always good energy to see hawks, but no Mute Swans and barely any Canada Geese. It’s Spring Migration season, but the birds were having no part of hanging out in the rain today.

This is a Mother Earth themed poem from my poetry journals circa 2013. Enjoy!
In The Stillness
In the stillness
I hear the beating
of the mother's heart,
in the stillness
I know the pain
of her longing.
I watch, I wait
for her children
to appear,
I know her longing
for it is my own.
I cry out to the Mother
where, oh where could I go,
for I have wandered lonely
in the light of the sun.
She tells me in whisper
Daughter I do not know,
your path is written in the stars
though on the river you do flow.
Sit peacefully in the still
the answers you will know.

A Chance Encounter with a Red-tailed Hawk
Back in September 2023 this beautiful red-tailed hawk visited my yard two afternoons in a row. The first day was September 26. I was walking my daughter out to her car and I looked towards my neighbors yard and saw a hawk sitting on the lawn next door.
Glad all went well, Pamela, and it sounds like some good birding at the refuge! Always nice to see a harrier. Happy to hear you are feeling a reprieve
