Thanks for sharing, Pamela. Those of us who've lived near the sea knew someone like your friend Happy, an old salt who was happiest put on the water.

He was truly an old salt. I know some other old salts as well. Fishing for a living in this area has changed so much since I was younger. Barely anyone does it around here any more. it's not sustainable.

Thanks Rod. He was a character. Somewhere I have a photo his boat. Maybe I will find it to add to the post.

Alas, no pics of Cappy’s boat. Other fishing boats but not his.

It reminded me of a story I wrote "Old shotguns and a dozen decoys". My grandfather was a dry land "Cappy". Some people will never be forgotten.

Well written Pamela. Elegy is the perfect form for grieving. The perfect music is Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings (1936). When it ends, there is a silence like no other.

An Elegy for an Old Friend: A beautiful poem, a beautiful tribute. Call me crazy, but I saw Cappy's Angel in BOTH of those photos.......!

Looked forward to reading River Tides, but ran into that damned WALL. Bummer.
