A Sunday rerun from the early days of Words and Pictures… Do enjoy!
This poem was from my March 2017 poetry journal.
Life Changes Who We Are
The wind howled,
It shook the house
And tossed dead branches to the ground.
What if I were the wind
I questioned—
Would I be a soft and gentle breeze
Or might I blow as wild as the furies,
Hot and cracking with the spark
That could light a brush fire
Without a care.
Maybe life is
Just a confluence of conditions
That blows
Like the wind
Either wreaking havoc
Or softly caressing
Our worn-down souls.
Once, I might have been a fury—
Young and filled with eager energy
Now I am the gentle breeze
Caressing life with a touch like feather
The cool tickle across my skin.
We never remain the same for long
Life changes who we are.

Points of Interest:
The Pink House is on Plum Island Turnpike in Newbury, Massachusetts. The Pink House was built in 1925. It was privately owned until after the death of the last owner. As per her wishes the house and the nine acres it sits on was sold U.S. Fish and Wildlife in 2011. It will be torn down soon after a long heated effort to save it as a cultural icon. The land will become part of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and be preserved from development along with other protected land next to it and behind it.
Kinda like life. You start off small and then grow up and be a lot stronger but the further you go the weaker you get.
I like the closing line, Pamela. Such truth to how "Life changes who we are."
